Deja View

Sad, but it was time to leave Valdez.

Since there is only one way in, there is only one way out.  Same sights, different perspective, still beautiful.  We wanted to mention the extreme snowfall in nearby Thompson Pass.

The record measurements are:  974.5 inches for a season; 298 inches for a month; and 62 inches for a 24-hour period.  Average winter temps in Valdez range between 22 degrees F low and 27 degrees F high.  Despite the prodigious snowfall, they tell us the crews are almost always able to keep the roads clear.

We were able to get a few glimpses of the 800 mile long Alaska Pipeline, since it parallels the highway north of Valdez.

Bob hiked to Worthington Glacier--no "base camp" this time.  Instead Jan chatted up "Calamity Jane," the proprietress of the visitor center.

We ate lunch at Nummy's Roadhouse.  We roadies really like roadhouses.

It was back on the Alaska Highway to reach Beaver Creek, YT, our stop for the night.

Today is the summer solstice.  It seems to be a big deal up here, what with 22 hours of daylight:  midnight baseball games, midnight marathons, a mass gathering on a mountaintop, and fireworks.  We were invited to the 35th Annual Solstice BarBQ in Klutina.  Declined because we didn't know what was being barbecued!

To our solstice buddies--hope you had one for us.  We're thinking of you.
